The City of Colorado Springs Metropolitan Transit Division retained Design Edge to design two separate Contractor Facilities for the bus driver’s and their management. The buildings are approximately 4,000 square foot and 8,000 sf. and house classrooms, break rooms, storage, offices, meeting rooms, and dispatch facilities for the City Transit bus drivers. The project has achieved LEED Silver NC certification for its building at 1070 Transit Drive. The building, completed in 2011, is home to MMT’s fixed-route service contractor. The structure of the Transit building uses pre-engineered metal made from scrap steel which is 70 -90% recycled. Using this building material reduces jobsite labor and reduces jobsite solid waste to practically zero. The exterior of the building uses insulated metal panels that create a thermal break between the exterior and interior panels, requires minimal maintenance, and lasts for 40 years or more. The wall insulation material is a bio-based, soy product and all the casework is made from wheatboard. The interior of the building is minimalistic with stained concrete floors and exposed ceilings resulting in less waste. Significant savings in landscape water use through drip irrigation and 40% savings in water use and reduced waste water through the use of water efficient fixtures.
